1. In a nutshell, what is Foundation–IIT program?

Foundation-IIT is an innovative 2-year program that aims to strengthen students’ foundation in Science and Mathematics by:
  • helping them understand the basics thoroughly
  • providing adequate exposure to the application of concepts and problem-solving.
This is an essential foundation for students to prepare systematically for and be successful in competitive exams like IIT-JEE, AIEEE, AIPMT, Olympiads etc.

2. Who is eligible to join the Foundation-IIT program?

Students who are entering class IX of any stream.

3. What are the subjects taught?

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Mental Abilities.

4. What is "Mental Abilities"?

Mental Abilities involves working with numbers and alphabets, solving puzzles of various kinds. Though this is not a subject of study in school, it helps in improving thinking agility and enhances learning capability in other subjects.
In addition, relevant techniques from vedic mathematics and speed mathematics are introduced.

5. What curriculum is the program based on: ICSE, CBSE or State Board?

The curriculum has been designed considering the syllabi of Karnataka State Board, ICSE and CBSE. The content is relevant for students of all curricula.

6. Does Foundation-IIT help me in my studies in school?

This program is aimed at strengthening the fundamentals. It will help in better understanding of the school curriculum and in acquiring essential learning skills..

Classroom Training Program

1. What is the structure of the classroom program?

The schedule of the program is as follows:

First year:
Classes are conducted for 18 days, Monday through Saturday, during the summer months of April/May 2009. The duration of interaction per day is 4 hours.

During the academic year, classes will be held once-a-week, either on a Saturday or Sunday. The duration of interaction each week is 4 hours. (Please refer to the list of sections for schedules and timings).
Three tests are conducted during the first year.

Second year:
Classes are conducted for 18 days, Monday through Saturday, during the summer months of April/May 2010. The duration of interaction per day is 4 hours.
Weekend classes resume from June 2010 and all academics will be completed by August 2010, facilitating students’ preparations for the Board exams. From September 2010 to December 2010, only tutorials will be conducted once a month.
Three tests are conducted during the second year.

Printed courseware is provided in 12 volumes. The table indicates the coverage of curriculum.

2. What is the nature of the classroom sessions?

Each classroom session is planned to be interactive and is based on multimedia presentations. The objective is to foster discussion of concepts rather than just lecturing. Students are required to come prepared to the class and participate actively in the discussions.

3. What is the nature and extent of work a student has to do?

The student is required to:

  • come prepared for the class
  • participate in the classroom discussions
  • work out exercises after each session

Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter and are categorized into three:

  1. Mandatory exercises
    This is a set of exercises that the student has to complete and submit when asked for. This set will have questions on all concepts of the chapter ranging from easy to difficult.
    These exercises are required to be worked out immediately after each session. The approximate time required to complete the mandatory exercises is 1 hour for each session attended.
  2. General exercises
    This is a set of exercises that a student can work out for additional practice. This will provide a wider variety of questions and problems ranging from easy to difficult.
  3. Challenging exercises:
    Challenging exercises have to be attempted on completion of the earlier sets. This set is designed to enhance the students’ analytical and problem- solving abilities.
    Also, relevant questions from Olympiads are included.

During the academic year, the student is expected to adopt a good work culture and work for about 4 hours each week consistently.

4. What is the eLearning support available for the student?

Apart from the printed courseware, the students are given access to our website which has the following:

  • Assisted Revision Modules to revise and recall the contents of each classroom session to ensure proper learning.
  • Significant learning happens when students answer the exercises independently at home, after attending the classes. To help students in evaluating their method of answering, detailed analysis of each question is provided. The explanations available in audio-video format are also aimed at reinforcing learning.

5. What is the support available for the students to plan their learning?

Mentors help the students in learning. Students have to meet the mentor regularly as per schedule and seek help in planning their work and adopting the right learning procedures.
With the objective of helping students to become better learners, they will be guided on :

  • Effective study techniques
  • Efficient problem-solving
  • Enhancement of soft-skills
  • Time management

6. What should a student do if he/she has doubts and needs clarifications?

The recommended mode for clarification of doubts is to meet the teachers and have a one-to-one discussion. Students can fix an appointment with the teachers and meet them in person. Alternately, students can send their doubts by using the e-mailing facility. Clarifications/ answers by the teachers will be e-mailed back.

7. How will the students and parents get to know about performance?

Individual login & password for our website shall be provided to both students and parents. Records of attendance, performance in tests and other important information can be accessed online.

8. What are the eligibility criteria to join the classroom program?

Please answer the following questions with a YES or NO:

  1. Are you enthusiastic about learning, even beyond what is prescribed in the school curriculum, and want to understand concepts in greater detail?
  2. Are you prepared to devote effort and time in reasoning things out, solving tough problems, in order to enhance your abilities?
  3. Has your performance in the last few tests/exams in your school been consistently good?
    If your answer is yes to all the above, then you are eligible for the program.

Note: Students who have scored 80% and above or equivalent grade in Science and Mathematics In the midterm / trimester exam of class 8 (75% for CBSE & ICSE) qualify for admission. Others will have to appear for a written test to qualify.

9. Is there any support provided towards the Board examinations?

To help students perform better in the school examinations, unit-tests on the Board pattern for practice will be provided for Karnataka State, CBSE and ICSE Boards separately. Practice-tests for class X Board examination will be administered and discussed in the classroom.

10. Where are the classes held?

The classes are held at Basavanagudi, Malleswaram, Rajajinagar, Jeevanbimanagar, J P Nagar and Yelahanka in Bangalore and at Kuvempunagar in Mysore.

11. What is the procedure for admission?

The following are the steps for admission

  1. Fill up the application form and affix a passport size photograph and clip the second photograph with particulars written at its back.
  2. Kindly refer to the list of sections and choose a section that is convenient. Indicate the same to the person in-charge of admission. Kindly note that allocation of sections is on a first-come first-serve basis. Hence, allocation of sections is based on availability of seats. Change of sections may not be possible subsequently.
  3. Submit the following to the person handling the admission formalities.
    • Filled-up application form affixed with a recent passport-size photograph. (2 copies of photograph required)
    • Copy of the marks-sheet of the mid-term/trimester exam.
    • Filled-up form indicating the intent of joining the course.
    • Cheque/DD for the fee amount.
  4. Ensure that you receive the following on enrolment
    • Information booklet for the course.
    • Time-table for the section allocated.
    • Receipt for the fee paid.
    • A copy of the Terms and Conditions.
    • Invitation to the orientation program
Note: It is important that students and parents know what students can expect to learn from the program. Copies of Foundation-IIT printed courseware are available in our office. Students and their parents are requested to refer to these.
